Massage Therapy and You
The ancient and well-known benefits of “resistance” have been considered therapeutic and of immense value, both in the medical world, and the general populous. A trained massage therapist has learned how to manipulate the soft tissues in the body, including skin, tendons, and muscles. He or she will use a variety of tools, including the fingertips, hands, and even feet to achieve the desired results. Several different health care professionals are trained to perform various types of therapy, including physical therapists, occupational therapists and massage therapists. Therapy can be accomplished in a variety of styles and settings.
Massage therapy is used for relaxation, reducing anxiety and stress, and alleviating tension and soreness in muscles. It is useful in reducing constricted and overworked muscles, lowering stress, nursing painful ailments, rehabilitating sports injuries, and for the general advancement of good health. It is only one of many valuable tools available for us to improve our quality of life. Fortunately, it can also be a pleasurable path to take!
A typical massage session lasts about one hour, and is given in a dimly lit area, often with soft music and possibly scented candles present. The recipient should discuss preferences and any health issues that are present. Many types of massage techniques are available to choose from. These vary from deep tissues massages to Swedish massages, reflexology, and a number of other specialized techniques. Based on the client’s medical history, physical condition, needs and goals, the style of therapy needed will vary. A therapist will usually supply their own specialized table, along with drape sheets and towels to provide privacy. A conscientious massage therapist will protect the clients’ modest, and keep them covered as much as possible throughout the massage.
An alternative to a full body massage is the chair massage, which is usually done in public, and does not require the removal of clothing. A wide range of oils, lotions and creams are used to smooth the skin and facilitate flowing movements during the massage. Therapy can be administered in an office or in the privacy of your own home, in a variety of health care settings, or in a spa resort or hotel.
Requirements and standards for training and accreditation as a massage therapist vary from state to state. Some states require a structured educational course as well as passing a proficiency test. In addition, some states also require a certain number of guided experience hours to be verified before issuing a license. Therapists can choose to establish their own businesses, share a business with other health professionals, or work for hospitals, care centers, spas or hotels. Full time therapists usually spend only 15 to 30 hours a week on actual massages, and the remainder of their time on travel, setting up equipment, and other business related tasks.
